The Founder's Profile
John Francis Schultz Jr. was born in 1948 in Tokyo, Japan, the son of a Captain in the United States Army and an elementary school teacher. He was raised in El Paso, Texas, graduated high school in 1966, and attended MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with a goal to become a theoretical physicist. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Philosophy and Science.
Based on a study of aesthetics and art criticism, John decided to pursue a career in the arts. He studied art history and painting in Texas, Mexico and New York. By 1976, he was showing his paintings in galleries in Soho and on 57th Street. He pursued his painting career while continuing his work in publishing, where he thrived in fine art publishing, particularly photography. By 1985, he had begun to work in publishing full time, editing books on Matisse, the history of immigration and the history of science, while helping physicists, chemists and other academic authors prepare college textbooks for publication.
In 1991, John was contracted by Microsoft to edit and illustrate Encarta, the first on-line encyclopedia. In 1994, he retired from publishing to pursue a career in writing. Having written two novels, he continues to write fiction, while consulting to nonprofits on funding,. He started John F. Schultz and Company in 2001 with two clients, and has grown it into a successful business providing grantwriting services to nonprofits world wide.
